That bridge was designed by FIGG, the company that built the doomed FIU pedestrian bridge.

Klobuchar’s remark was apt. It means we shouldn’t just accept that structures may fail, we should try to understand why they fail and what we can do to prevent failure.

The point is that we have the knowledge and the means to have safe bridges. We are not responsible for the bridges in other countries. Every bridge everywhere should be safe, but only our bridges are our responsibility.

Underdesign is the main culprit. This structure was flimsy from the beginning.

It tells you nothing. The FBI routinely look at such things to look for any evidence of a crime. There was none.

What category? This bridge clearly was unsafe, but “functionally obsolete” does not mean unsafe. A lot of structures are functionally obsolete without being unsafe.

That bridge fell because it was damaged by a fire under it. There were no injuries, so less newsworthy. The Atlanta bridge was not at all similar to the Minneapolis bridge in construction. It was a common concrete structure.

Right. It was an ordinary bridge and a poorly designed one.

What is “sac”?

Ylli Berishaj — The bridge was built long before he was governor.

Bass Warner — Sure it does. A bridge collapsed recently in Taiwan.

Underdesigned generally, Inadequate connections at end joints, whether by design or construction error, and poor maintenance. Removing part of the bridge during maintenance work aggravated the problem of weak joints by reducing stiffness.
