  1. A book I bought when I was in high school in the 1960s was Hogben’s classic Mathematics for the Million. I lost it long ago, but replaced it a few years ago. Besides having a lot of actual mathematics, it contains much history which is good reading.

  4. We do a lot of useful things with mathematics, regardless. The foundations are interesting only to a few purists, and they were dealt a setback by Gödel.
