  1. At his age, most people are retiring. If he were a distinguished professor, he would have stayed at his last place of employment until he was ready to retire, or found a new position before becoming unemployed. I suspect he just wasn’t distinguished. It is not surprising that he couldn’t find a job in academia.

  2. He was retirement age, so that is not at all surprising. What was his reputation in his field? Why would a university hire him at that age? If a professor is distinguished, a university might try to recruit him at that age, but he was not of that stature. He should have planned for retirement better.
