  1. I’m guessing inadequate factor of safety. Something broke, and the load transferred to other structural elements was too great even if the rest of the bridge was in good condition. It’s like the I35-W bridge in Minneapolis. One gusset plate broke, then the others immediately broke. It was underdesigned.
