GM may not be “cool” but I want a competent car company, not a cool car company. The new GM is building excellent vehicles. I have two late model Chevys (not electric) and they are both great. If I had to have an all electric car, I would get the Bolt.

Luke Toepfer — The reason for doing that is that it’s a lamp test for the safety check when you have the car serviced. Without it, you need two people to test those lights safely.
3
Juan Nunez — Definitely not a station wagon. Look at the 1960 Ford Ranch (station) Wagon. That was a station wagon.
3
Knight Industries; GM has been focussed on rebuilding the company after the bankruptcy reorganization. It has been successful, but at the expense of Holden.
2
Kenneth Williams — People who want unnecessary power features are the ones driving up the cost of pickups. This is a Jeep. It should be basic. It is already too tarted up.
2
HopeaToffee — I don’t understand why anyone is down on plastic. It’s a useful material — versatile and inexpensive. What matters is whether the particular plastic used is the right one for the application. What you make a dashboard out of? Sheet metal, so there will be lots of sharp edges in a crash? Exotic hand-finished hardwoods? Who can afford that? “I have just one word of advice for you, Benjamin — plastics.”
2
Jared — The grille evokes old Chevy pickups.
2
Jesse Lox — Do the models driven in Africa have the V-12?
2
That's a good way to put it. A Buick driver wants a GMC pickup, not a Chevy.
2
Now we are hearing that the engine has a tendency to self-destruct at low miles.
2
I hate these hi-tech lock/unlock systems. If my power door locks stopped working, I could insert my key and unlock the driver’s door mechanically. Then I just operate the handle, which is not flush, to open the door. I don’t want a touch screen, either. I don’t object to them everywhere — I use an iPad — but not on my dashboard.
2
FrightfulAccountant — Was it ever sold in Europe? Car people in the US have known that “SS” means “Super Sport” for decades.
2
SoCal 760 — The new GM is doing very well.
1
Chevrolet should have reworked this thing into a police cruiser. With the demise of the Crown Vic, Dodge has the field to itself. Ford has only SUVs.
1
After reading the comments, I see that it was a police car. Makes sense, now.
1
But they are claiming it is a truck. I don't think they understand trucks. Where do you mount the winch, for starters?
1
Nantucket is an island off Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Maybe he is from there.
1
Rob Bader — Yet you had time left over to post this. Doug isn’t just about answering the question he poses. He’s entertaining.
1
pxidr — The new GM is doing quite well. I’m annoyed at their divestiture of Opel, though. Our Chevy Cruze (an Opel) is a great car! My Colorado, a real Chevrolet, is a great truck. The Saab episode was lamentable, but that was the old GM and I don’t suppose the old Saab would have survived under anyone else, either.
1
A ton heavier than other mid-sized trucks, but still only five lug nuts per wheel.
1
That's why they called it "Aurora."
1
funktron4 — Saturn wasn’t very good. The Cruze is what Saturn should have been.
1
It was clear to me that Saab was going down when they changed the way the hood opened.
1
I don’t like the crew cab format. DeMuro says that it was chosen because that is the biggest selling segment of pickup configurations. But that is because people who have a lot of money are buying tarted up crew cab pickups to use as family cars. I don’t think Jeep buyers are the same demographic. If I wanted a Jeep pickup, it would be an extended cab version of this with a shorter wheelbase, not a longer bed. And the softop is a horrible design. Does it really stick up in the windstream when you are driving?
1
I’ve had two Isuzus. They were the vehicles I liked best— I bought them new and kept them until I wore them out.
1
alexander1485; Ford is so good at secans that they recently decided they will stop making them altogether.
1
That thing in front that lifts up is the “bonnet.”
1
Your explanation of GMC trucks is correct. In the old days, Chevrolet dealers sold all the Chevrolets and nothing else. The other, smaller brands could be combined, for example Buick/Pontiac. If you were a Buick driver, you might want a pickup, but you would rather get it from the same dealer. The GMC pickup was a little nicer than the similar Chevy, because the people who bought them drove Buicks and Cadillacs.
1
All these comments about Nazis are really lame considering that Chevy has sold Super Sport models for more than 50 years. Any car guy knows that.
1
Mike J. Super Sport Retro
1
I’ve seen one only once. I had to ask what it was. It belonged to a retired couple who were touring the west coast. They seemed to be having a great time.
1
When a Land Rover isn’t expensive enough.
1
Does Arnold Schwarzenegger have one?
1
Gianni Fulgieri — There have been several successful “SS” Chevys in the last 50 years or so. They probably aren’t sold in Germany.
1
How hard would it be for a person to get that compartment open with a crowbar?
1
His story is a little off, but it is correct in one sense. Some years back (post-war era) Chevrolet dealers sold all the Chevrolets and nothing else. Buick, etc. dealers all sold GMC trucks. Chevrolet and GMC trucks were once different vehicles. Eventually, the GMC pickups became variants of the Chevrolet, for economic reasons. Nowadays, a GM dealer can sell all the brands, so there doesn't seem to be much point to having two marques for pickups.
1
choppa — As he pointed out, “SS” goes way back in Chevy history, although as a modifier, not the whole name. In the 1960s, when WWII as a more recent memory, nobody thought there was a connection to Nazis.
1
Too bad, because it was such a nice looking car. It didn’t need a bigger engine. Put it on a better platform with sporty suspension, brakes, and steering, and a straight six would be enough. And a top-notch interior, of course.
1
My Chevy Cruze is an Opel. Decent car. I don't know why GM sold Opel.
1
Nipplehook; not a meaningful comparison. Camaros have always competed well against Mustangs.
1
Buick was popular before China entered the picture. I think there was a place for Buick. It was a luxury model, but was more tasteful than a Cadillac. I liked some of the Buicks, but never liked Cadillacs. I never owned either, though. Today, it isn't what it used to be.
1
ThatGuyKappa — You don’t have to keep watching.
1
Eric Johnson; The new GM is doing quite well under CEO Mary Barra (except for selling Opel).
1
My Chevy Colorado (2nd gen) is the best vehicle I have ever owned.
1
Those wheels are ugly. The cost of the WT is almost twice that of my 2nd-gen Colorado WT. The high-zoot trucks are crazy expensive.
1
Sunahama Nagai — I think it’s an automatic with a manual-mode shifter.
1
Which one is "it"?
1
At that time, I think the divisions controlled their product development.
1
Oldsmobile was between Chevrolet and Buick, I think. Buicks had some cachet; Olds, not so much. I kind of like it, except for the Northstar engine. Did it have the same engine problems as the Cadillac Northstar?
1
arethouready — at least switch to a black v-neck.
