This is amazing! I was impressed with the clarity and efficiency of your discussion of carbon from the standpoints of chemistry, physics and biology. Brava! My take on silicon-based life is that, considering how complex carbon-based biochemistry is, the probability of having an alternative biochemistry based on silicon (or anything else) is negligible.

No, statistics do not tell us that anything is possible.

Some people do.

The most abundant element in the universe, by far, is hydrogen. Helium is second. All of the heavier elements together amount to about 2%.
2
The oxygen definitely formed after the hydrogen.

Because the probability is far lower than that. Most likely impossible.

Rarely. You only remember the cases in which “impossible” was wrong.

What life forms exist in galaxies other than our own is of no practical interest. They are so far away in both space and time that nothing will ever be detected suggesting the presence of life. We can detect some planets in our nearby neighboring star systems, and can determine some of their characteristics. Think what you like about other galaxies — it is metely academic.

There is no way to calculate that probability. He just pulled it out of his hat.
