  2. Entropy is “S” because it is a function of the state of a system. He certainly couldn’t have used “E.” Edit: There is a paper by Irmgard K. Howard on the subject of the origin of S and U. He states that Clausius had been using the letters mathematically for some time before choosing names for them.
