I will explain it. Pluto’s mean orbital radius is nearly a third larger than Neptunes’s. While its minimum orbital radius is within that of Neptune, it is just barely so. It spends a very small percentage of its time near that radius, and because of the tilt of its orbit and also a resonance with Neptune, it is never closer than 17 A.U. to Neptune. Thus, Pluto isn’t really “in” Neptune’s orbit, even though its orbital radius is sometimes the same as Neptune’s. Pluto is special.

Pluto is hardly ever there, and it isn’t really “in” Neptune’s orbit. It is in a completely different orbit.

Pluto is not in the orbit of Neptune, so Neptune does not have to sweep it out. Because of the tilt of its orbit, Pluto never gets very close to Neptune, even though, at times, it crosses the cylinder defined by Neptune's orbit.

I don’t see how changing the term would be helpful to anybody.

A “star” is an object massive enough to start fusion reactions. A brown dwarf star must be at least 13 times as massive as Jupiter. When one star orbits another star, it is a binary star system. Actually, they each orbit the center of mass.

If it’s “round” (spherical), it’s an orb. “Planet” implies revolving around the center, like planetary gears in a transmission.

But they didn't even take it away. All that was done was to add a qualifier "minor" to denote small planets.

I think it more likely that it was formed within the solar system, then disrupted in some way. I’m no expert, but if it originated outside the solar system, it seems to me it would have had to lose a lot of energy to get into its current orbit.

It isn’t arbitrary, though. We define categories of things because it is useful. There was a problem with the planet category including Pluto, so the definition was refined to exclude large Kuiper belt objects, not Pluto specifically.
