Bun Yan — Yes, it was obvious after the Lion Air crash that there was a defect in the aircraft. However, no other regulatory agency was ready to ground it then.

Mr. Njoroge wants the 737 Max scrapped. I can understand why he would feel that way, but it isn’t rational and it isn’t going to happen.

Kelley Sauer — No. A committee of Congress can hold any hearing which suits them and invite testimony from any person they please. This does not interfere with the official nvestigations of the crashes. Enough is already known from the preliminary reports to raise concerns within the purview of this committee.

Malone Mantooth — You can’t waive criminal prosecution because victims don’t prosecute crimes. The government does, and they aren’t going to give anyone a pass on a serious crime. The problem is, there must be proof of a crime. You can’t just prosecute for a crime because a lot of people died.
1
MossyGolem — That isn’t true. A crime can be committed in the manufacture of an unsafe product. But an act does not become a crime through the numbers of people killed. It is the nature of the actions and the presence of intent that makes the conduct criminal. Add to that the higher burden of proof required for criminal prosecution. The FBI are looking into this so it is possible a crime could be charged, but it won’t be simply because there were many people killed. This is not the first airplane crash which killed large numbers of people. Has another aircraft maker been charged with a crime for the crash of one of its aircraft? If you know of one, please cite it.

ACriticalVegan — Your proposal is inconsistent. A multi-nation FAA would be one agency.
1
al gow — The situation today is that the FAA is conferring with similar agencies around the world to decide how to proceed with this aircraft. That is your “multi-nation FAA.” I expect that in the future the regulatory agencies will not be so quick to accept FAA certification without scrutiny.
