Virgil Phoenix — Given the long time scale and allowing for statistical variation, and applying the principle that we are likely to be typical, rather than special, one would assume that we are not the first advanced civilization and that many others have had time to become far more advanced technologically. That is the basis for Fermi’s conundrum (it isn’t a paradox).

  10. ZeroSumJ1 — Sure, but you make a common mistake here in arguing from the size of the whole universe. There are many billions of large galaxies, but only one, M31, close enough to be visible with the naked eye. It is 2.5 million light-years away. The others are vastly farther away and farther back in time. I will gladly stipulate that every large spiral galaxy contains an advanced civilization of intelligent beings at some point in its existence, but that is of no practical significance because it is unverifiable.
