I don’t know if that’s right, but I know that most stoners I meet are incredibly stupid.

You could start by learning something about science and scientific method. Until you understand how science is done, it is difficult to ask meaningful questions.

I think their stomachs would turn at the massacres of schoolchildren.

Bo Zo — Yes, and the probabilities are lower than SETI proponents assume.

Science is neither left nor right.

Newton? No.

Virgil Phoenix — Given the long time scale and allowing for statistical variation, and applying the principle that we are likely to be typical, rather than special, one would assume that we are not the first advanced civilization and that many others have had time to become far more advanced technologically. That is the basis for Fermi’s conundrum (it isn’t a paradox).

Beautiful World — Dr. Watson is a PhD, but not a medical doctor. He is a biologist.

Rick Flair — They might want us for food.

ZeroSumJ1 — Sure, but you make a common mistake here in arguing from the size of the whole universe. There are many billions of large galaxies, but only one, M31, close enough to be visible with the naked eye. It is 2.5 million light-years away. The others are vastly farther away and farther back in time. I will gladly stipulate that every large spiral galaxy contains an advanced civilization of intelligent beings at some point in its existence, but that is of no practical significance because it is unverifiable.

Roger Smith — Actually, they have been expanded through the doctrine of incorporation.

Exactly.

It’s a cult, but there is nothing religious about it. It’s fascist.

Rodale was not a “health expert,” although he may have claimed he was.

Science does allow for questioning orthodox scientific theories, but only through proper application of scientific method and submission to scientific review. This is not a license to reject scientific consensus just because you don’t like the conclusions.
1
Few students in middle school understand scientific method. They learn some science, but they don’t actually do science.
