What has been "lost" is the whole infrastructure of the Apollo Program. Estimates are that it took about 400,000 people to land men on the Moon and return them to work. That number includes many thousands of people at hundreds of companies making millions of parts. Have you ever tried to get parts for a device which is 50 years old? The parts that weren't used may have been discarded; the tools that made them may have been discarded; the people who made them may be deceased. We usually don't try to repair a 50-year-old device; we replace it with a new device.

A powerful computer wasn't required. A reliable computer was.

bazoo513 — The guidance computer had help from the ground. It didn’t have to be able to handle the entire flight with all the corrections needed. Course data would be sent back to Earth, then instructions sent up.
