  4. My (USA) toaster has a cord with a ground pin. I don’t want a fuse in the cord. If a device needs its own fuse, it belongs in the device, not the cord.

  5. That’s overkill for a standard. If you were designing a room for electrical equipment, you would put duplex or quad receptacles where you needed then. For example, in an electronics lab, you would probably mount duplex receptacles horizontally along the back of the bench top, every three feet. For a wood shop, you would plan where each piece of equipment would go, then install power as needed. For normal residential use, you don’t need a rule of so many feet. You just need to think about where outlets would be convenient. What I don’t understand, for example, is why outlets are installed in the center of the wall which is the obvious place to put the sofa, or behind the headboard of a bed.

  7. We implement such protection in the circuit breakers. We also have receptaces with built in ground fault interrupters. The latter came into use years ago before GFI breakers became common, and were used mainly in bathrooms and kichens. Today, a moden system wuld use combination breakers.

  8.  @TexSweden  — Absolutely wrong. Current in a normal circuit through a device doesn’t hurt you at all. Only current through your body can hurt you. That current depends on the conductivity to ground and n the voltage. Higher voltage, more current, more danger.

  9. It’s good advice. I have a space heater which I was using on what I thought was a heavy-duy extension cord, but I noticed, after using it for a long time, that the heat in the connection was scorching the molded housing of the receptacles in the cord. Now I don’t use any cord and I no longer use the “high” setting on the heater. I think I will replace the receptacle in the wall as well. Whatever you do with your heater, check the connections. If you use an extension cord, run it on the highest setting for awhile, then hold the connecting point in your hand to check the temperature.

  10. Short cords are actually better. It is more hazardous to have a lot of extra wire spread around. Where you must have more length, you just need to get a suitable extension cord. The real problem in many US homes is too few and poorly located receptacles.

  11. No! The circuit breaker protects the wiring, and the circuit is wired for 20A max.

Ome manufacturers of receptacles seem to prefer ground up, becuse they shw them that way in their catalogs, and put there name on the devices to read correctly with ground up. Nevertheless, ground down is more commonly used, even by electricians.
