  4. One advantage of a mercury switch is that the arc is contained in the glass envelope, so it won’t ignite flammable fumes.

  5. Wiring for 120V is more expensive than the extra 24V wire needed to power a thermostat from the furnace.

  7. The type he showed with a magnet to close the switch should not require different circuitry than one with a mecury switch. We are better off not using mercury in these devices.
