Recall that Tesla touted the strength of this thing when they introduced it. These guys are just following Musk's lead.

This represents a segment of society who had life too easy growing up. The rest of us are accustomed to being more practical.

An airplane also has a lot of space for redundancy. Normally, electric power comes from the engines. If you lose both engines, the Auxiliary Power Unit starts and provides electric power for critical functions.

People who design airliners have a better understanding of redundancy and fail-safety than do the people who designed this. Also, the companies who have been designing and improving automobiles for a century. I once had a car which suffered total electrical failure while I was driving. I lost my power-assist steering and brakes, but could still steer off the highway and stop safely. Tesla engineering seems to be driven by the computer people, not the car and truck people. My entire career was in the computer industry. I don't want the computer people designing my truck. My pickup is designed by car and truck people, with a modest contribution from the computer people.

Any pickup will do some things better than a station wagon. Suppose you want to pick up a load of manure for your garden. You can put it in plastic tubs in your station wagon, but the smell will get into your interior and hang around for a long time. With a pickup, you could just put it in the bed loose, then hose it out when you are done. You can also carry things which are too large to put in a station wagon, like 8 foot lumber.

Help absorb the kinetic energy, actually, and spread out over time, not instantaneously.
