  1. Imagine you are an ancient man. You do not have the strong jaws and powerful physiques of other Hominids. Without fire to cook with, you will grow weak from malnutrition. Without fire to protect, you will die of exposure or from predation in the dark of night, where the flashing eyes of monsters are unhindered. The gods once threw down their divine thunderbolts and started a great fire. Your ancestors stole from that fire and nurtured it for generations, like their very survival depended on it. Even after the secret of creating fire was discovered, the significance of that kept flame did not die out easily, for the fire is the very symbol of early human civilization itself.
