  1. Even late twentieth century American Democrats and Republicans don't fall neatly into today's American Right and Left. Nixon created the EPA and enacted wage and price controls, and Kennedy passed tax cuts and famously called for personal responsibility. Just like multi-party democracies, American politics are made of shifting coalitions of interest groups that are either part of the ruling coalition or the opposition at any given time, this is why the major party platforms get completely rewritten for every new presidential nominee.
