Eric Metaxas wrote in his recent book "God's Not Dead" that they did locate cities of the plains roughly where the Bible said they were that had been hit by an air burst meteor (like the Tunguska Event) and which had subsequently gone from being perpetually occupied for centuries to going centuries without habitation. If I remember correctly, one of the sites was Tell el-Hammam in Jordan. Either way, there were real cities that were destroyed by fire from above that people were afraid to resettle that the story would likely have been based on.
