  1. As a half-asian person I never saw people who looked like me portrayed in media, and it never occurred to me until I became an adult and started seeing token asians. As an asian person I hated seeing asian vikings. It feels super insulting to me. Like I can’t appreciate something which is not about me unless there is an out of place representation of me present. The notion that you cannot identify with or feel empathy for another human being (or a character) just because they are not exactly the same as you strikes me as either narcissism or psychopathy. I would empathize better with a well written and performed character that does not share my race, sex, socioeconomic status, national origin, culture, religion, time period, etc than to have a suspension-of-disbelief breaking inclusion character made to specifically represent me.
