The Communists voted with the Fascists to put Hitler into power in Germany, and WWII only started because Russia initially Joined the Axis Powers to protect Germany's eastern border and Japan's western border, so Germany could invade Europe and Japan could invade the Pacific. The distinctions between the two totalitarian factions really only come into existence when Hitler and Mussolini purge their former allies to consolidate power (as all dictators do) and then decides to strike Russia before Russia strikes them. If Hitler and Mussolini had kept a few prominent Communists in their inner circle or Japan had managed to keep Germany and Russia from distrusting one another, we would probably not think the totalitarians had a left/right dichotomy at all. Also, Democrats used to be proud to be red and many of them openly sided with the Communists (particularly after the USSR switched to the allies) or were Communists who fled persecution in Europe, but they had to change to blue when the US and Communist Russia fought for control of Europe's fallen empires after WWII because Red Leftists were suddenly the enemy of America, and it has stuck because Communism is still more or less politically radioactive in America to this day.
