When my grandparents were young, a college degree was a strong proxy for either being a social or intellectual elite. The percentage of positions for the elites is not directly correlated with the number of people who get degrees. This forces the elites to get more and more advanced degrees to prove their status and compete for the limited number of elite jobs, while increasing the cost of credentialing for everybody. It's precisely inflation. By making university close to universal, you just guarantee that your barista and your delivery driver have taken on tens of thousands of dollars in debt and put off family formation for several more years. The university income premium is a prime example of why the average income, with its heavy weighting of outliers, is much less important than the median. University is only worth it for people who can complete a high value major and parley that study into work in the field they studied in, otherwise it's just a debt trap to keep you out of the middle class.
