When I was a kid, I got one second hand, and we could only afford new batteries about every other month, so I had to find wall sockets to plug it into in places with enough light to play (so I often plugged it in near table lamps wherever I went). The batteries were reserved for when I could not find an outlet. If I had somehow managed to get a Lynx or a Game Gear, I would never have gotten the hundreds and hundreds of hours I got out of my Game Boy. I still have many fond memories of Mega Man, Super Mario Land, and Link's Awakening, because Nintendo chose affordability and clever tricks over showiness.
