  1. Given the limited run time, the film swaps a lot of the banality and questions about how war changes men in the book for futility and poignancy which work better on screen. The Drinker is right that the adaptations work well for a film, keeping the pacing from dragging and helping the less historically literate get a better sense of context. The film was clearly adapted for the purpose of accentuating the meaningless horror of WWI and it delivers on that purpose. A great film based on a great book that could never have been done justice had it been made in Hollywood.
