  1. "Science" used to require people to learn about a subject and make observations in the real world. Now, public intellectuals just make abstract mathematical models from their ivory towers and have no interaction with reality. Better yet, as long as they reach the conclusions that their politically well-connected sponsors paid for, their work will be shielded from academic scrutiny. Companies like Philip Morris are far from the only set of deep pockets with agendas that do not coincide with the public good. The practice of laundering bad research through academic journals without legitimate scrutiny will only serve to further topple the public's crumbling faith in our institutions.
