The drive towards exploration predates the human species. Animals also possess it. It is our capacity to recognize the irony of "discovering" something that is known to or built by others that makes us different than the creatures in which the biological drive to discovery was founded and passed on to us. Discovery is important because the unknown has the potential to unalive us or to fundamentally change life in a way that might guarantee the survival of our descendants for unfathomable stretches of time and change the very nature of those offspring as a species. Think of the first sea creatures to leave the intense competition of the oceans for the land, the first animals to move into the trees for shelter, or the first hominids to rely on fire to cook food, protect themselves from cold, and ward off predation. Much of what we find morally reprehensible in people today are the traces of our ancestors and the stories of journey to becoming us engraved in the collective unconscious by the same Baldwin Effect that created all animal instincts.
