  1. Not sure why you think the Ottoman Empire was tolerant of religious minorities until the 20th century. The Ottomans brutally persecuted Christians, to varying degrees, until the Crimean War, when the British, in exchange for helping the Turks against the Russians, persuaded the Ottoman Sultan to remove laws discriminating against Christians. However, around 60 years later, you have the Armenian Genocide. There isn't any historical warrant to say the Ottoman's were tolerant of religious minorities. None. There were times when the persecution was worse than at other times, but at no point did the persecution stop.
