  1. There seemed to be a lack of warmth and charismas here, although some of the houses were stunning. If the young leave and don't go back...then a place loses its vibrancy. One senses its been quite dead there a long time, and although Appalacia and other parts looked rougher...the people were full of spirit...something that can happen when communities live on top of one another...just through having to get on and think about others in a condensed form...whereas Alabama is farming...so communities are strung out, and if the young have left...the place becomes quieter and duller...Nice looking towns...but ghost towns...do they shop online? Surreal place, and not easy to work out! Perhaps as Peter said...folks work away and bring money back...but don't mix socially much...so keep own properties up to scratch...but not inclined to share their free time in town centres.
