Ah, yes, the Ontario "Science" Table and its consistently wrong modelling. There is an astonishingly easy way to tell where COVID hospitalizations will go: just look at the active case count. If the active case count rises, the 7-day moving average of hospitalizations will rise 1-2 weeks afterward (for the winter 2020-2021 and spring 2021 waves), or about 3 weeks afterward (Omicron). When the active case count falls, the 7-day moving average of hospitalizations falls about 1 week later (for the winter 2020-2021 and spring 2021 waves), or about 2 weeks later (Omicron). The active case count has fallen steadily in Ontario for over three weeks. It is unikely to exhibit a sustained rise again until the spring (assuming it does rise then; it did last year, but it might not this year). It is remarkable to me that the supposedly brilliant minds of the Ontario "Science" Table are evidently completely unaware of the high correlation between active case count and hospitalizations.

Why hasn't the government put a shred of money into increasing ICU capacity Oh, but the Ford government did. Or rather, it put out a press release on April 16, 2020, touting how it had increased critical care beds in Ontario: "The province has added 1,035 acute care beds and 1,492 critical care beds and taken steps to ensure hospitals have the staff available to care for a sudden surge in patients." Those extra beds raised the number from 2,012 up to 3,504. Except . . . the ICU bed census carried out by Critical Care Services Ontario showed that the number of critical care beds never went above 2,600. While that data was not for public use, a few physicians on Twitter did post it a few times. The Ontario government has subsequently confirmed the ICU bed totals on its own COVID-19 data pages, and that data shows ICU beds topped out at 2,554. That's 950 beds short of what the Ford government claimed it had created in that April 2020 press release. Where did those 950 extra beds go? Apparently, they were never created, and the Ford government lied about having created them. That press release is still online. Survival rate in Ontario for COVID cases aged 60-69 as of Dec. 31, 2021: 98.0% (1,235 deaths out of 61,541 cases = 2.0% fatality rate = 98.0% survival rate) I'd love to give you the rate for a more recent date, but the Ontario COVID-19 website has not provided case data in ten-year age brackets for the last two weeks, and for the two weeks before that it was posting incorrect data. Dec. 31st is the last date the data was reliable. The Public Health Ontario site provides data in larger, 20-year age brackets (60-79).

@fec9333 but how do you protect the vulnerable when the virus is circling around everywhere since so many people have it. The same way we handle influenza? At least keep the mask on in public spaces. Masks do nothing, as is plainly obvious from looking at the real-world data. Mask mandates don't correlate to lowered case counts; they correlate to HIGHER case counts.

@fec9333 People who drive alone wearing a mask is indeed dumb, but not when in public There is a very easy way to demonstrate that masks accomplish nothing: look at the example of Toronto. That city has had a mask mandate in place for 575 consecutive days. And yet the active case count in the city has been HIGHER than the day before the mask mandated started on 466 of those days, or 81% of the time. And you can't point to low compliance; compliance has been in the area of 99% from the very start of the mandate. It's even more dramatic when you see it in graph form, as it shows the scale at which active cases soared above the pre-mandate number. It's clear from this real-world data that masks do not do anything of consequence to lower COVID cases.

@jayceewedmak9524 Two questions for you: (1) What percentage of COVID cases in Ontario have ever been in an ICU? (2) How has the cumulative ICU admission rate for COVID changed over time? If you've looked at the primary source data published by the Ontario government for yourself, you'd know the answers to these two questions.

@CMCooperstown2009 The real reason is that exponential growth is incredibly fast. Yes, but that growth does not last forever. It hits a ceiling, after which it falls off almost as fast as it climbed. And the rate of hospitalization for Omicron is lower than that of prior variants: the hospitalization rate of COVID cases for nearly all of 2021 was about 5%; Omicron has seen that drop to about 3.7%.
