true the space shuttle stopped the development of rockets to other planets. But you have to consider that the public (who was ultimately footing the bill for such an endeavour) didn't want that. remember we are talking about a time where apollo 17 JUST made the evening news highlights. to the average person going to the moon or mars was cool but wouldn't directly benefit THEM. the science gains of other planets might've helped them but the risk and investment was too big to take that chance . On the other hand a spacecraft that definitely would improve their quality of life with communication satellites and medical reasearch and better products seemed a hell of a lot better for the money you would fork out. also private enterprise would immediately be able to use it as opposed to the numerous tests flights you would need for something like mars. and having something to boast to the reds was not bad too. all around for someone with a 1970s attitude the shuttle was a great move. and when you look at the program as a whole. it really changed our way of life on earth for the better. With countless comsats and helpful discoveries to its credit. as well as helping promote a spirit of cooperation between races and genders. I have to say for all the money we socked into it turned out to be a pretty damn good space vehicle
