yep he was gonna keep diving until it failed, no matter what. guaranteed disaster.
10
@solareclipsetimer i don't know how they could have prevented the columbia disaster, besides halting the entire shuttle program.. which BTW they should have done, even before the challenger disaster
8
stockton's AI voice really wasn't nasal enough, but still, not a bad attempt 😉
7
the shearing of the titanium rings seems like heavy evidence that the hull failed rather than the viewport. in any case i hope they find the viewport! musta been shot like a bullet out of that contraption
7
i'm as shocked as anyone that this contraption even survived a few deep dives, but stockton mush was apparently going to keep diving it until failure, no matter how long it took!
7
classification would have stifled stockton mush's ability to implode titan
6
@schrodingerscat1863 yes.. i almost hate to say it but their early detection system worked pretty well for what it was. it was the CEO that malfunctioned the most.
6
@solareclipsetimer that foam ramp as they called it wasn't the only spot shedding foam chunks. shuttle launches had foam coming from many spots, largely at random. the ramp area was one of the worse spots for losing foam, but even with improvements there the shuttle was still a deathtrap that could never have been made adequately safe. i'm glad it's gone for good.

at some point, engineering is just pure waste 😅😭
4
yep, from what i've heard, including notably on this channel, not only did nobody actually test the final design, nobody actually engineered it! it was essentially thrown together by stockton and his titanic ego
4
@enigmacrk200 would you glue a bumper to your car?
4
the shearing of the titanium rings doesn't support that tho. the hull may have been strong enough for a while but oceangate's own data showed it was degraded over time
3
yep, even anyone who's ever shopped bicycle parts knows that carbon fiber only takes limited strain before it's compromised and can fail catastrophically without warning even with careful inspection
3
yes, epoxy is glue too, and since rope (as the carbon fiber strand essentially is) does NOT provide support when pushed/compressed vs being stretched/pulled, all that glue was mostly what provided the structural strength within the entire hull
3
and virtually anyone who has ever shopped for bike parts knows that once carbon fiber has been sufficiently stressed, it can fail with no warning, even after fairly careful inspection. many a cyclist has wisely ditched a seemingly undamaged carbon fiber wheel or seatpost after taking a good smack, and knowing the critical piece could be fatally compromised
3
@Metal-Nine11 the original proposal was for a 10 inch hull thickness, but to go to twice the depth. stockton apparently decided half the thickness for half the depth was therefore sound, even though he obviously wasn't going to halve the diameter of the vessel. and he may have started with that doubled number in order to disguise his motives of diving to titanic.
3
but he did get fired for refusing to sign off on another dive
3
@bees5461 sounds plausible, but raises questions.. like specifically why you say tony convinced stockton to design in-house, to fire all outsiders along with some insiders, in part to extend his employment, and that he was driving the design just as much as stockton. are those assertions based on direct testimony and evidence, or perhaps insider info, or are you presenting deductions based on your interpretations of indirect evidence?
3
@solareclipsetimer yes... despite its shortcomings, their vaunted early detection system actually worked rather well, and stockton all but ignored the data!
2
@ahmetmutlu348 the viewport wasn't even rated to go as deep as the titanic. i have zero respect for stockton mush.
2
@Metal-Nine11 IMO, not suicidal, just deeply narcissistic
2
for me it's about the general public finally learning what narcissists like stockton really are, and how destructive they can be
2
@jamesbutler5570 i guarantee your glued car was properly engineered and tested! and hopefully you wouldn't glue your car back together on your own
1
@davidg3944 frozen rope does sound like a good physical analogy 👍
1
@garyzimmer4149 the gold standard of one person's narcissism seducing investors, employees, and customers into 100% certain doom
