I used to work at a small investment bank in the Netherlands and we had a special desk for lottery winners. From what I understood of the coworkers who were in direct contact with the lottery winners, for most of them the effects of the lottery on their life happiness was neutral after the initial high of winning the lottery had passed. Money truly isn't the instant ticket to happiness most people think it is. Also, if you can hide the winnings from your friends and family you should. Apparently friends and family members demanding money is a really common problem.

Could hummus be an alternative investment to crypto? There are so many different flavours and if the price goes down, you can just eat it!

It is important to understand in modern day investing that the Boomer generation would invest with care since risky investments are a gamble with their future. Where the younger generations realize their future is fucked either way so they might as well invest their life savings in an obscure crypto with an obscene name and hope for the best.

A personal example of how bad the market currently is where I live; I have the privilege that my parents gifted me a substantial sum of money so I was able to buy a large townhouse with 5 bedrooms (cause on a single income I wouldn't be able to buy anything). I now have multiple friends and coworkers, all with good jobs (most are higher ranked than I am) asking me if I would consider renting out rooms because they are desperate to find something.

The housing shortage has been an ongoing concern in the Netherlands for over 5 years now. What used to be the price for a small mansion, is what you currently pay for a new or renovated middle class home. In some area's of Amsterdam, houses that were build for the working class in the 1970's will now sell for over 1MLN euro's. It is true though that before COVID Amsterdam seemed to be the epic center of the price boom where since COVID prices in more rural area's of the country have experienced a higher growth in prices.

At the same time, it's kind of sad how people like Dozy confirm prejudices against people of color/Nigerians/Africans, making sure any attempts at emancipation have been set back by another 10 years.

Having your life savings in cash on you is a different situation, there is a maximum you are allowed to own in cash in order to prevent tax avoidance and illegal transactions. Traveling around with a large sum of cash can be a valid reason to take this until the individual is able to prove it's not from ill gains.

Thank you for clarifying I'm not allowed to catapult steel balls from a Mercedes. Would it be okay if I did it from a BMW?

@phantomcreamer why would it need to be durable? It tastes best when eaten right away!

Speaking as an auditor myself; if you love being an auditor there is possibly also something wrong with you :-)

@KieC. I have given it thought, but besides the fact I'm not happy about the idea of strangers walking in and out of my house, there are also a lot of legal restrictions against airbnb in my country.

@tropics8407 nope, that’s part of the problem; environmentalists have sued the government that they have to take climate change and ground pollution serious making it difficult for the government to give out permits. On top of that there is a shortage in labor and building materials. So there is no end in sight.

Don't be too sure about that though; the real estate shortage started in my country 5 years ago and realtors would also recommend against paying above the asking price because "these prices won't last". We have seen 5 years of up to 20 percent growth in housing prices in some parts of the country. A nicely renovated flat in a building that would be lower class 5 years ago, will now sell at 450.000 Euro's, which 5 years ago would buy you a standalone house in a wealthy suburb.

@SnakeHandler-g7u i have given it serious consideration for that reason. But my parents were strongly against it. Plus shortly after that I got a girlfriend and she came with a similar offer if she could rent a room in my house and I accepted that offer.

I'm still surprised at how easy it can be to fool journalists. I recall this case of a 13 year old boy who managed to convince a New York Times journalist he was a millionaire stock trader. The only tangible thing he showed was that he paid for a 200 dollar dinner. I live on the other side of the world and reputable economic news outlets reported on that story without any questions.

@lalajun5902 I indeed do not know the details, but having a large sum of cash on you (greater than a threshold amount) can be a valid reason to suspect (at the very least) tax evasion.
