I actually think the car already looked dated when it came out.

It looks like a presidential car in an alternative universe where communism has overrun capitalism.

It's been a major criticism of the Chrysler 300, that it tried to look too much like a Rolls Royce. Also, there actually are plenty of 300 models driving around that are turned into fake Rolls Royces.

In the Netherlands it was actually a relatively common car at the time also for a brief period due to all kinds of fiscal incentives making the car pretty affordable. Although it only lasted for about a year until Tesla came to the market here with the model S. But I recall that 20% of all Fiskers sold were sold in the Netherlands.

@currentaf8455 The tiny fraction of cars that has these kind of engines (also considering these are generally not driven a lot) isn't gonna make a single difference for the environment. It's just a reminder that environmental regulations will take away everything that is fun in life.

I've had the previous Octavia, the best part about it, is that it's such an underestimated car and brand. Amoung my coworkers, the VW Polo and Golf was the most popular, so Skoda is often looked down upon as "the budget brand". So getting in the car, most people found out that it's actually very similar to the Golf in quality, it has all the options that the other cars had (like a panoramic sunroof) and it was a very comfy car for passengers, especially compared to cars like the A3 and CLA, which look cool, but are horrible for passengers.

@ChrisKonopack-yu2yo And lets not forget the pink Honda S2000 from 2fast2furious standing next to it.

I am sure that if they came out (seriously) hurt they wouldn't be posting this online like this. That being said, I was more worried for the guys in the car, in case it would catch fire or something like that.

alwl89 I have never owned a Ford, I have considered a Ford Mondeo Hybrid Titanium X, which was similarly priced to the Skoda Octavia but is a bigger car, however the interior was made of cheap plastic and the infotainment screen just looked too dated.

I really doubt they will make it here. European and American safety standards are insanely high and in the past every attempt at coming to the western market has failed on this. I remember that a couple of years ago there was a Chinese brand that wanted to rival Volkswagen in Europe and seemed to be a really strong competitor. Can't even remember the name now.
3
Sometimes I forget that Lexis is still an active brand. They were always a bit niche compared to the German luxury brands, but I don't know when I last saw a new Lexus in the wild.

@RJaviALR What is your source for that 12 year warranty because I can only find a 4 year factory warranty on the official website of Rolls Royce. Perhaps Rolls Royce offers an extended warranty option, but honestly; all major manufacturers have that these days. Plus; I have no doubt that Rolls Royce's building quality is better than it's rivals, but that also means parts are much more expensive to replace (especially genuine Rolls Royce parts), plus; luxury cars these days are all about having the latest technical gadgets. These are things that become outdated and break usually rather fast. That is also why all the modern luxury cars have such a low reliability score compared to a cheap but basic Toyota.

About the ice scraper placement; I must tell from experience that it won't do you much good if the fuel door is frozen shut too! XD

I'm a big fan of Skoda! If you don't have a fetish for brands, they truly offer the most car for your money.
2
That and 40 year old Lada's.
2
To be fair, I never found BMW's to feel very premium in terms of material usage and such.
2
There is (or was) a documentary on bill gates on Netflix, where you can see him on his daily commute in a Mercedes S Class. But I also heard rumors that Gates is actually a big petrol head and actually does have a significant collection of cars including Lamborghini's and Rolls Royces.
2
I do dislike that it has the Bentley wing dashboard from the Continental, now that the continental is getting an update with a completely new style dashboard. Makes this one immediately feel a bit dated.
2
It really differs from one car to another. I know people who always drive these high risk cars and they claim to have no issues with them at all. I on the other hand always buy cars with a reliable reputation and have had big issues on multiple occasions.
2
We are now two years later, how is your Discovery doing now? :D But in full honesty; I really think this is an issue with new cars, all the new technologies make that these cars won't last as long as their predecessors did. Considering the carbon emission created with the production of a new car, I truly wonder if most new cars really are better for the environment than older cars.
2
This looks like a car for a communist dictator 50 years ago to me!

I dream of driving this car just to piss off Zoomer hippies

"it's taken them a bloody age to come with an SUV", Jaguar and Landrover are the same company. Why would they make an SUV in the first place?
1
THe chinese one went as far as to copy a whole Austrian village. This should hardly amaze anyone.
1
They will never be able to bring that feature to market due to regulatory reasons.
1
What I dislike about this car (or any Renault for that matter) is how many small items work differently from all others cars, making it unnatural to move it. Like, the stick under the bonnet was mentioned in the video, but think also about stuff like the sun visor for which the spare out to take it down is on the left side, or the windscreen wipers which have to be moved down to operate instead of up.
1
I never liked the current polo, but this looks promising.
1
I had expected a Matt to rip on the backseat interior of the Escalade a bit more. Compared to the other luxury SUV's, the Escalade is just a GM truck with leather upholstery. The back seats look like they could come straight out of an airport shuttle and the cupholders are made of plastic. Granted that in the United States the Escalade is probably half the price of the others cars of course.
1
@smileyr it is a luxury suv, just not at the same level as the other cars in this comparison. And American so already a different idea of luxury than that of European brands.
1
I think there will always remain a market for a cheap entry level car, but I agree that it won't be as cheap as it was in the past since they are just less basic than they used to be. However, I think there will be a market for years to come for cars like the Volkswagen UP and Polo, as long as there are people who just want a reliable new car.
1
I've had several Skoda's, I'm a big fan of the brand and I'm currently in the market for a new car, I'm leaning towards the Volvo V60 or Mercedes CLA, but I cannot put the Superb out of my head!
1
It's not just car regulations that are making the future look more gloomy for petrolheads; urban planners and politicians are step by step forcing people to get out of their cars and start using public transportation. More and more streets are being closed off for traffic, classic cars are banned from city centers, inner city streets are being made confusing and narrower and parking space is removed to discourage motorists from entering the city centers. The major of Amsterdam has declared that as of 2030, only electric cars may enter the city, even if you are a citizen of that city! Left wing European politicians are slowly but surely trying to take our cars away from us and nobody is really doing anything about it.
1
Does it finally have Apple Carplay now though? A huge miss about the previous generation is that they used the old infotainment system from Mercedes, meaning the car didn't have Apple Carplay.
1
I think that when you are at that level of wealth, a car will be an insignificant item for you. Most of these people probably have a fleet of black luxury sedans and SUV's available to them at all of their houses across the globe.
1
@cavaleer and the cullinan was made to appeal to American and Arabian buyers since it fitted their needs more
1
@cavaleer I recently had to think of your comment; I saw a cullinan and an Escalade standing side by side recently and the cullinan was tiny by comparison.
1
@shubhamsinha5324 Even the LWB version looks like the Sport compared to an Escalade
1
Great... now lets see Doug Demuro's review of this car....
1
The way it's shown in this video, it's about the same price as an S class! Exaggerated of course, but as shown could easily be twice the base price.
1
Regarding the 7 year warranty, as a lease driver I have noticed it has a positive impact on the residual value of the car, therefore also on your lease price.
1
An issue unique to Porsche is that for the previous generation Panamera and Cayenne, the headlights could be popped out without the need to open the hood. Once this was known they became a super easy target.
1
One annoying thing that should really be mentioned is how the material on the doors get damaged rather fast if you lean on it with your arm. I have a huge dent in my door as a result of that.
1
@baronvonjo1929 Overal it's not a bad car. I agree I have a low trim level, but especially an ST line definitely matches most middle class cars. But the material in the door is just a design flaw. I have had countless cars, cheap and expensive, and none had this issue.
