I used to work in a private bank that catered exclusively to high net worth individuals and we had a separate client desk for people who had won the lottery. Coworkers who worked with lottery winners confirm indeed how most people who won the lottery aren't happier as a result of it, or perhaps even more miserable. Best advice would be to either keep it completely secret and don't spend a penny or move away and get new friends.

The part about Putin still learning English if false. He purposefully doesn't speak English in public or on camera, but in a private conversation he is fluent in English and even speaks with a British accent.

Survival bias to the most extend. And hoovers were also being repaired just because they are expensive. These days it's just cheaper to buy a new one than to repair your current one. More expensive items like a refrigerator or washer are often still repaired when they are damaged.

@itsyaz7449 For normal super rich yes, but the very richest can spread that out much longer. Think about the Rockefeller or Rothschild or even Medici families that are by todays standards still super rich.

@Casual-Sage I think it's more a combination of factors. Yes, technology has been developing rapidly, causing a 5 year old product now to be more dated than a 20 year old product in the 1960's. That however, doesn't mean the 5 year old product is not good, it's just that our perception changes with new technology. Second, products were indeed more build to last back in the days, but they were also a lot more expensive relatively.

Psychology/psychiatry is one of the studies with the lowest future prospect actually. Mostly because 80% of your classmates are mentally unfit to perform this profession to begin with.
