Survival bias to the most extend. And hoovers were also being repaired just because they are expensive. These days it's just cheaper to buy a new one than to repair your current one. More expensive items like a refrigerator or washer are often still repaired when they are damaged.

@Casual-Sage I think it's more a combination of factors. Yes, technology has been developing rapidly, causing a 5 year old product now to be more dated than a 20 year old product in the 1960's. That however, doesn't mean the 5 year old product is not good, it's just that our perception changes with new technology. Second, products were indeed more build to last back in the days, but they were also a lot more expensive relatively.
