I recently learned that in the Netherlands you couldn't even buy your child a performance car if you wanted to. Insurance companies simply refuse to insure a car for a teenage driver if it has more than 136HP. Basically, a BMW 3-series with the standard engine is the most high performance car you are allowed to drive until you reach the age of 21.

@denalisiomontpellier4064 I mean, I like cars. But I also don’t understand the race to ever bigger SUV’s leven hatchbacks obsolete. Those large SUV’s don’t even make sense on the European roads, they barely fit in some narrow streets and require multiple parking spots.

Are we ignoring the huge band-aid on Doug's face?

@ yeah, so no large SUV for starters. A slightly used hatchback would be a better option. A Volkswagen UP!, a Polo, or if you feel like splurging; a Golf would be more than sufficient for a young driver.

I do personally always recommend a manual car as your first car. I think that if your very first car is already an automatic transmission, you will definitely unlearn how to drive a manual car. Might be less of an issue in America than in Europe. And I do agree that going forward with EV's, manual cars will be less common, but I do think you are opting out of a learning opportunity if you don't.
