@jacoblesperance2115 As an American, I can't speak to the measures that Canada's taking. Maybe they're excessive. But I assume those measures are working well, since Canada's deaths per capita are much lower than the US's. Same with Japan. Their numbers are low because they took COVID seriously. Doing well with precautionary measures in place is not a reason to stop precautionary measures.
Also, old and unhealthy people are already protecting themselves. It's not like we've been forgetting to do that. COVID is just very spready. And if you look at the percentage of COVID deaths that are age 65 or older, COVID is right in line with other common causes of death (i.e. heart disease, stroke, chronic respiratory diseases, influenza/pneumonia). In first world countries, most deaths are old people. So comparing COVID deaths of younger people to total deaths of all people is statistically irresponsible.
Finally, you can't only look at fatality rate because the prevalence of a disease matters as well. That's why we aren't constantly freaking out about Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Death counts are a good way to combine both factors. And at least in the US, our death counts are getting really bad and we need to do more.
