We've had two checks already, a $1200 and a $600, and a few months with extra money added to unemployment insurance. But yes, this is for a one-time check. There is other stuff in the bill - reinstating the unemployment bonus, money for small businesses, etc. I don't know why we didn't just do wage replacement like all the good countries. It would've saved us a lot of hassle (and jobs).

@rorycallaghan5719 My only concern is that with all the jobs being lost and hours being cut, past tax returns aren't necessarily accurate at telling us who needs the money. I'm fine with spending $100 billion on checks for relatively rich people to make sure everyone who needs money gets money.

@rorycallaghan5719 It's important to note that those examples were PPP loans, not stimulus checks. We should definitely be more targeted with whatever small business spending is in the bill. But the $2000 (or $1400) checks don't really need that treatment. Tom Brady can buy himself a nice dinner or something lol.

The problem is that with all the new unemployment and underemployment, someone's situation might be different than it was on whatever tax return they're using to determine income. I think the most important things here are not missing anyone who needs the money, and getting the money out quickly. Both of those are accomplished by just giving everyone a check.
