  4. It would be better than the awful socialist "utopia" (all utopias are dystopias) that we live already. Academia is a farce, it was the biggest deception in my life when I learned it was not in fact based on merit. "Why would we want the direction of research to be dictated by investors that only care about maximising profit and minimising costs? " Because they're the ones paying the costs ? like, wtf is even that reasoning. Its their money, they can go whatever direction they want. If you don't like it, you take YOUR money and put where your mouth is, and go to the direction you think is best. But no, what you want is to use the stolen money from the tax payer to do that, because you know ITS BULLSHIT the direction you're trying to go, it doesn't have any value to be gained, thus the cost will NEVER be recouped.   5. Except they did, the famous Bell Labs created the entire field of Computing Science. But that was when the economy was based on share-holder, the actual humans owned companies, instead of a collective amorphous number of random stock owners. Collectives never work... its actually amazing.
