Regarding the stroke vs bore thing: Having a larger bore would also result in more force, due to the greater surface area to act on with the cylinder pressures. It about evens out. The reason why diesels don't do this, however, is because wider and stronger pistons along with greater force by the piston means more conrod stress, so that ends up needing to be more robust. Also, with the low RPM and turbochargers, it doesn't need the large valve area granted by the large bore.
