Carbon fiber aluminium composite might be a good relatively affordable replacement for making strong, lightweigh, connecting rods, it's effectively a standard CF composite but with the epoxy replaced by aluminium. Has most of the advantages of carbon fiber, with most of the advantages of aluminium.
