I love where you're going with this, but your explanation of the flatplane is wrong. Pretty much, the only advantage is that it requires as much counterweight as an inline 4, so not much, meaning it revs easier. Crossplane cranks require more counterweights to cancel out the forces. The flatplane is actually worse balanced. If you do the math on how they fire, it's the exact same (once per 90 degrees), but the crossplane has a different firing order to compensate for the wonky arrangement.
