@Ramk0core English is weird because we're speaking a Germanic language (from Anglo-Saxon and Danish) with a lot of vocabulary thrown in from Latin and French and some Celtic. We're speaking a patchwork of everybody else's spellings and grammars. But it means we've got lots of different words for nuances of the same thing where other languages have fewer words. You can get pretty subtle and precise in English but the price you pay is a language so mixed up most of us never learn to speak it correctly - takes a freaking lifetime to get it right!

I was a preschool teacher when a visiting university professor and his wife enrolled their little girl at our school fot a year. The kid never learned any English and I don't speak any Scandinavian language but they were an awesome family and the mom wrote down some words for me. Anyway what I'm saying here is I heard a lot of Danish that year and while I didn't understand it, it didn't sound all that coughlike or hiccupy to me. I have an idea the Swedes and Norwegians are exaggerating for the sake of poking fun.
