  1. Good Godamighty, I'd hate to be judged for the rest of my life for what I thought and said as a teen! The Civil Rights movement was building at that time and I took my parents' word for it that racial integration was wrong. I was growing up in a rural South Texas county that was 90% Latino and had an African American population of ZERO so everything I "knew" about black people was what I was told, with no input from reality. In the following years not one black person I got to know bore out the stereotypes I'd been taught and by the time I was 20 it was easy to see which side history was on. I resonate with what happened to this woman; the views I renounced about black Americans parallel the views she renounced about Asians and LGBTQIA+ people. How can anyone but a bigot hold it against us that we were once young and ignorant?!
