Only if " dead man" just means momentarily embarrassed. Congress doesn't actually do anything that detracts from their enrichment or hinders their business practices, just provides some public entertainment for a day.

@e-spy Beyond "God save her," we desperately need to elect many more like her and like the Squad. Unless the corporate-free wing grows a LOT, hearings and investigations will always be just a show to distract the public while Congress goes on with business as usual.

It's a treat to see Katie mop the floor with these vermin but it's too soon to say "take down" in connection with any of these hearings; nobody's actually gone to jail or been seriously interfered with as a result of being confronted or exposed in the House. They endure a few uncomfortable hours and then cry all the way to the bank.

jack hahn Not really divided on the main objectives, just not robotically identical in every detail. On the big stuff like M4A, the environment, taxing the rich, police brutality, they stand together. I'd call them broken if some of them started accepting corporate funding. Till that happens I don't see them as divided.

@jaredneff5189 Agreed and I think the term "progressive" has been hijacked too many times by politicians who are anything but. Personally I prefer to call the ones who aren't faking it "the corporate-free wing."

jack hahn AOC? Which issue?

jack hahn Still trying to figure out what you meant. How did I "agree?"

@sarah4hp No doubt about that. But for these House dramas to produce real results, we have to elect a lot more members like Porter and the Squad. There just aren't enough of them yet. Edit: So cheering Katie on isn't enough; our VOTES help way more than our applause.

@ms.demeanors @Ken Osiris It might have something to do with the Green New Deal, which is a key position the Squad's members all have in common. Katie didn't announce support till last month.

These hearings make for great entertainment but for someone in Gonzalez's position it's only a minor annoyance to be exposed like that. He knows he owns the place: If some Congressmember wants to make a public display of sassing the boss, the bottom line is he's still the boss and at the end of the day his servants in this chamber will do as they're told and he'll go on fattening without any real interference from them. This is no different than the Congressional grillings of Wall Street bank executives after the crash of 08 - the public got to watch a thrilling spectacle and the robber barons got away with the loot.

@batgurrl I don't think he's trolling; it's the sad truth that a lot of grandstanding goes on in hearings while the fact remains that the corporations that appear to be in the hotseat own the majority of lawmakers in both parties and know that when the show's over they'll still do as they're told. It's going to be that way till there's REAL campaign finance reform.

@timn5008 As I said before, there aren't enough of them yet. That means they've sometimes got to stand back and pick their battles. I don't even know if that's what happened about the minimum wage and I can't form an opinion about it till I know what was at stake and whether they gained any political capital on anything important enough to justify not raising hell. They certainly could have put on a good show and I don't know why they concluded it wouldn't be worth it. I do know their votes in Congress will start counting for more when we elect more of them, and I value their votes more than their speechifying.

@batgurrl Dunno. My guess would be sometimes no sometimes yes, but I bet it's no more than a minor fluctuation for maybe a couple of days. That's all just guessing though.
1
@batgurrl Come to think of it, the Wall Street players who really invest big would KNOW that nothing comes of the hearings so I don't suppose it makes much of a ripple.

@timn5008 So if they're just stooging for the corporatists why don't they collect the customary rewards for that and fatten up on big donor bucks?
