@joannleichliter4308 Your forgetting the native inhabitants were Crimean Tatars who hated Russia and were "ethnically cleansed" under Stalin kind of like the whole Holdomor genocide against Ukrainians, Crimea was a payback and geographically it made sense. When Ukraine became independent they invited the remaining Tatars to come home from Soviet enforced exile in Kazakhstan. Under Ukraine there existed a Russophile political party in Crimea which as a region was nominally independent, the party advocated union with Russia and in the last free election they got about 10% of the vote so even most of the ethnic Russians preferred living under Kiev's nominal control.

Is there not kind of a military treaty arguably between the US-UK and Ukraine, the Budapest Accord where the US and UK guaranteed Ukraine protection if they gave up their nuclear weapons?

Dont count on it, yes our high level leadership is crap on an epic level but huge amounts of our soldiers and field commanders have two decades of war experience which means something big time and our equipment is far superior, not just the big things but little things like almost no Russian soldiers with night vision etc. There are certain things Russia does have high quality equipment but due to costs they have very few of those, their strategy is to throw huge amounts of 35-40 year old tanks at an enemy and hope they can overwhelm them.
