The reason the ship turned after it started to drift was they followed protocol and dropped the anchor but just one of two I heard, starboard side anchor? causing it to turn and drift right into the pylon, if they had just let it drift it might have continued on course right under the bridge. There is a theory they got a tank of some bad diesel fuel, rampant selling of contaminated fuel is apparently a thing right now.
