Look at a Map, your talking just North of the Caspian in the lower Volga region, historical Islamic areas are both to the South, East and West of the Caspian, its not very far at all, especially in comparison to how far Marco Polo went, how far the Vikings traveled and how far Alexander the Great took a whole army.
