Other former officials have said Putin wants to go beyond just re-establishing the former Soviet Union, he wants to re-establish the former Russian Empire and take countries back like Finland and Poland even that the Soviet Union did not control. He views these other people's like Ukrainians etc as "lesser Slavs" it is a very Nazi like view of the world that Russia's neighboring peoples are "less than Russians", very similar to Hitler's views ob his neighbors.
