You are correct in that US numbers are far from correct, the cost is not the main issue, the insurance WILL pay if you meet CDC criteria for testing BUT that is the problem in that the CDC criteria is very narrow, although they did loosen it a bit, the other great problem is the CDC required testing by only one test method which then was returned to the CDC after samples taken or a tiny handful of approved labs and the testing kits did not work due to a bad batch which resulted in only three states having a small number of testing kits, CDC has been sending more kits and has somewhat loosened up testing criteria but not enough. FYI until recently I worked in Public Health, IMO the CDC has been terrible so far in this crisis. China has an official death rate of 3.7% even with their low ball numbers and it has slowly been going up, why are they citing 1-2% death rate and 4% hospitalization rate when Chinese data suggest near 20%? Remember the second wave of Spanish Flu was the really bad one, did people who had mild first experiences with the flu then have the immunological over reaction on their second exposure? A common feature of corona virus family, thus no vaccines for them.

Tony I am down in Vancouver, we have 8 likely cases here. This has been spreading for 6-7 weeks, the first US patient arrived back in the Seattle area mid-January and showed no signs for a week before being hospitalized, State Health Dept stated in a press release subject had quote "close contact" with over 60 people in that time, many of those have been spreading this throughout the Northwest ever since by community transmission. I worked in Public Health for a County Agency in charge of Public Health Emergency Management, IMO the State Health Dept were more concerned by pronouns than they were with planning.
