It does not, your 100% right, people keep saying this 2% death rate, but that is BS, even China's low ball numbers say 3.4-3.6% and it has been going up, that said figuring out the death rate this way, deaths divided by total cases is wrong until a outbreak is OVER because most cases, especially early on in a outbreak are in the beginning or mid stages of the virus, you do not sneeze and die, it takes time, usually. The better way to get a ROUGH idea of actual death rate DURING an outbreak is divide deaths by total of deaths and recovered, obviously those two categories have completed the infection cycle, when you do that you get a death rate of 6-7%. You saw this same mistake with SARS while it was going on they were saying 2-3% death rate and as it went on that got higher, at the end it was close to 10% if I recall. FYI I worked in Public Health.
