  1. You are 100% correct, I grew up on a ranch and was riding a horse before learning to ride a bicycle. Very quickly, unless I needed it for some reason, I gave up using a saddle and rode bareback and soon after with a hackamore (no bit), I could control my horse without even using a hackamore. These historians probably barely know the front end from the rear of the horse. The early hypothesis is correct I am sure.
